William Herschel and the discovery of infra-red radiation. Physics Narrative for 14-16. In 1800, William Herschel published a series of papers describing experiments which led him to identify infra-red radiation, a form of radiation beyond the red end of the spectrum of visible light.

Infrared radiation was discovered by William Herschel in 1800. He was studying the heating effect of different colours of light by using a prism to produce a spectrum of colours and thermometers to measure their heating effect.
Herschel's telescope will collect infrared radiation from distant stars. Herschel also measured temperatures in the region just beyond the red colour where no light was visible and, to his surprise, recorded an even higher temperature there.
Infrared light was discovered about 200 years ago by the German-born British astronomer William Herschel. About one half of the starlight produced and emitted throughout the history of the Universe has been absorbed and re-emitted as infrared light.
