Early Life. Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820. She grew up in England, where she had a comfortable life with her wealthy parents. She studied several languages, history, and mathematics with her father at home. As a young adult, Nightingale felt called to be a nurse. Her family did not approve.

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, to well-to-do parents at their temporary residence in Florence, Italy. Named for her birthplace, she grew up in Derbyshire, Hampshire, and London, where her family maintained temporary homes. Nightingale was educated largely by her father.
Florence Nightingale - also known as the 'Lady with the Lamp' - was the founder of modern nursing. She was also a statistician and social reformer who helped care for soldiers during the Crimean War. After the war, she set up the Nightingale School of Nursing, which aimed to formalise the education of nurses.
