Frank Langella portrayed Skeletor in the 1987 live-action film. As this was a PG motion picture, this depiction of the character was far darker and more menacing than his comical animated counterpart, serving as both a competent and threatening antagonist to the heroes.

He accepted the role of "Skeletor" as a gift to his children - particularly his son, Frank A. Langella III - who were avid fans of the He-Man franchise. Despite an uncomfortable costume and make-up which left him barely recognizable, Langella found said character great fun to play.
Several reviewers praised Frank Langella's portrayal of Skeletor, including Rose DeWolf in the Philadelphia Daily News (though saying his costume looked like a Halloween mask) and Roger Hulburt of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
