This is a list of heavy metal artists from the formative years of the movement (formed between 1963 and 1981). For bands formed after 1981, please consult the lists for each heavy metal subgenre. In the late 1960s, a number of bands began pushing the limits of blues rock into a new genre which would be called heavy metal.

- Black Sabbath. Los miembros de esta banda británica son considerados los padres del metal. Los primeros precursores de este género junto a otras bandas de los años 70 fueron un grupo de jóvenes inconformes con su status social en Birmingham, la Inglaterra de 1968.
- Judas Priest. Tanto como Sabbath, Sacerdote de Judas son referenciales en la fundación del heavy metal en el mundo. Creada en 1969 también en Birmingham, Inglaterra, con una propuesta muy alejada de los proyectos de bandas de los 50.
- Scorpions. Otra de las bandas de metal pesado organizadas en Hannover en 1965. Sus fundadores fueron el cantante Rudolf Schenker al lado del guitarra Karl-Heinz Follmer, el bajista Lothar Heimberg y el batería Wolfgang Dziony.
- Rainbow. Una de las bandas de rock más famosas lleva el título de creadores del heavy metal junto a Sabbath, Scorpions y Judas. Concebida por Ritchie Blackmore, en Hertford, Inglaterra en 1975, en un primer período hasta 1984 y luego, entre 1994 y 1997.
