The Beat Cop is a minor character who appeared in Tim Burton's 1996 animated film James and the Giant Peach. He is a police officer who lives in New York City and is the head Police Chief in charge of the New York Police Department.
He is portrayed by actor Mike Starr.
The Beat Cop was a kind and reasonable authority figure. When he first meets James Henry Trotter he was at first a bit skeptical of James Henry Trotter's story, but when his wicked aunts Spike and Sponge reveal they are James' guardians the Beat Cop himself instinctively and immediately does not trust them and becomes very suspicious of them and puts himself protectively in front of James, correctly suspecting what kind of cruel people they really are. When the aunts go nuts and attempt to kill James Trotter with fire axes, the police chief immediately whistles for his fellow cops to protect James and keep the crowed back, only being stopped short by the bugs coming in to save James. He was both shocked and dumbstruck when he saw that the giant bugs existed.The Police Chief in a moment of satisfaction even ordered the crane operators to take the tied up wicked aunts Spiker and Sponge to jail.
He was very glad that James Henry Trotter was safe and sound, even allowing James Trotter and his newfound family to live in Central Park.

James and the Giant Peach is a 1996 musical animated fantasy film directed by Henry Selick, based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. It was produced by Tim Burton and Denise Di Novi, and starred Paul Terry as James. The film is a combination of live action and stop-motion animation.
