Lincoln-Zephyr Continental (1940) was the first time the name Continental appeared on a car from Lincoln, as a model under Lincoln-Zephyr rather than a separate model. They were partially hand-built since dies for machine-pressing were not constructed until 1941.

The Continental nameplate would be used by Lincoln, throughout its history, for over five decades. This first generation of the Continental would re-appear after World War II and would become the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V-12 engine, ending in 1948.
The “Continental Cabriolet” body style was aptly named. The name suggests European flair, sophistication, style and luxury. The car was intended as the style leader of the line, and a means of attracting customers into the show rooms. It would also be the most expensive 1940 Lincoln-Zephyr.
