The college has an exceptionally rich cultural, sporting and musical life. Our award-winning music practice building (the Clore Music Studios), our fantastic sports ground, and our brand new Gradel Quadrangles are all just a few minutes from the main College site.
New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham (1324-1404), Bishop of Winchester, as The College of St Mary of Winchester in Oxford. It very soon became known as New College to distinguish it from an earlier Oxford college (Oriel, founded 1326) also dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
New College is one of the largest, most famous and architecturally striking colleges, with beautiful gardens, and a variety of modern and old buildings. It has a thriving, supportive and internationally diverse graduate community, with approximately 100 new graduates admitted each year.
The Holywell Quadrangle. By the 19th century, the College was expanding again, and a major programme of development by two architects, George Gilbert Scott and Basil Champneys, created a large set of buildings along Holywell Street.
Un college bellísimo, con un alto valor histórico y arquitectónico, y muy cuidado. La capilla, aunque pequeña, es bonita, y el claustro es precioso. Además, es un lugar de referencia para los fans de Harry Potter y de La materia oscura, pues aquí se rodaron escenas de ambas sagas. De José Joaquín G.
A vuestra izquierda se encuentra el césped de Holywell Quad, mientras que si miráis a la derecha podréis ver los New Buildings del New College. Pero no os dejéis engañar por su nombre, ya que la estructura no se ha tocado desde la época victoriana .
