Plot. After an intense seasonal thunderstorm, an Indian mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (from his chattering vocalizations) becomes the pet of an English family residing in India after they save him from drowning. He becomes friendly with some other creatures inhabiting their garden.
Rikki-tikki-tavi is a mongoose whom Teddy and Teddy’s parents adopt after Rikki-tikki-tavi nearly drowns in a flood. Because Teddy and his family saved Rikki-tikki-tavi’s life, he is fiercely loyal to them. He bravely fights off Nag and Nagaina, two snakes who occupy Teddy’s family’s garden.
As the titular character and protagonist, Rikki-tikki-tavi is a dynamic character who gains confidence as he goes from being a flood victim that the family takes in to the family’s protector and pet. Analysis. Rikki-tikki-tavi fought a great war in a bungalow in Segowlee. Though other animals offered advice, it was Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose—a small, pink-nosed creature somewhere between a cat and a weasel—who single-handedly won the war. His name comes from the sound of his “war-cry.” Kipling starts his story off as a fable.
