chapter iv. Tweedledum And Tweedledee They were standing under a tree, each with an arm round the other’s neck, and Alice knew which was which in a moment, because one of them had “DUM” embroidered on his collar, and the other “DEE.” “I suppose they’ve each got ‘TWEEDLE’ round at the back of the collar,” she said to herself.
This essentially sets Alice up to fail as she moves through Looking-glass World and tries to figure out how to properly conduct herself, especially when the brothers then tell her that the song is inexplicably wrong—everything she knows is, apparently, not correct.

They chastise her for not beginning a conversation with them, but she is distracted by the poem about the two engaging in a battle.
