Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family believed to be a domesticated descendant of Artocarpus camansi originating in New Guinea, the Maluku Islands, and the Philippines. It was initially spread to Oceania via the Austronesian expansion.

Breadfruit is a highly diverse (over 120 known varieties) tropical fruit tree growing to heights of 9 to 18 metres with large (20-90 cm long) dark green leaves. It begins to bear fruit after about six years and remains productive for over 50 years.
