Inmate Bonin was executed February 23, 1996 in the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison. Bonin was the first California inmate to be executed by lethal injection. Warden Arthur Calderon gave the order to begin the execution at 12:09 a.m. and Bonin was pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m. Bonin spent his last day visiting with friends.
Bonin was executed by lethal injection inside the gas chamber at San Quentin State Prison on February 23, 14 years after his first death sentence had been imposed. He was the first person to be executed by lethal injection in the history of California.
