He accomplished this by abducting her boyfriend Gregat the hospital, and then forced him to write a staged letter of rejection and join the Marines. As he dropped the letter on Laurie's dresser he sees a handful of smiley face pins, and takes one. He then carries the pin as his symbol for the rest of his life.
