In 1939, Crown Prince Olav was appointed an admiral of the Royal Norwegian Navy and a general of the Norwegian Army. During World War II, Olav stood by his father's side in resisting the German occupation of Norway. During the campaign he was a valuable advisor both to civilian and military leaders.
Daughter of King Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. Married Mr Erling Sven Lorentzen in Asker on 15 May 1953. King Olav was born at Appleton House in Norfolk, England, on 2 July 1903. He was the son and only child of Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of Wales.
Princess Märtha of Sweden (Märtha Sofia Lovisa Dagmar Thyra; 28 March 1901 – 5 April 1954) was Crown Princess of Norway as the spouse of the future King Olav V from 1929 until her death in 1954. As Olav only became king in 1957, Märtha never became Queen of Norway.

On 30 June 1944 the government-in-exile in London appointed Crown Prince Olav Chief of Defence. He overtook leadership of the Norwegian armed forces and cooperated with the Allied Powers.
