Bad Ems was the seat of Bad Ems collective municipality, which has been merged into the Bad Ems-Nassau collective municipality.

Since July 24, Bad Ems is part of the UNESCO World Heritage! On 24 July 2021, UNESCO decided to recognise Bad Ems as part of the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" World Heritage Site.
