Semmering is a town in the district of Neunkirchen in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It is noted for its skiing, and has hosted the Alpine skiing World Cup several times. When the Semmering Railway was completed in 1854, the town quickly became a popular tourist getaway in winter months.

The Semmering Railway went into operation in 1854, and in 1998 it became the world’s first railway line to be awarded the title “UNESCO World Heritage Site”. The technical masterpiece was planned by Carl Ritter von Ghega, at that time the first standard-gauge mountain railway in Europe.
