Idstein lies in the Taunus mountain range, about 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of Wiesbaden. The town's landmark is the Hexenturm (Witches' Tower), a 12th-century bergfried and part of Idstein Castle.
In 1122, Dudo received the castle of Idstein in the Taunus as a fief under the Archbishopric of Mainz. This was part of the inheritance of Count Udalrich of Idstein-Eppstein. He also received the Vogtship of the richly endowed Benedictine Bleidenstadt Abbey (in present-day Taunusstein ).

Idstein Castle was built in the 11th century, presumably by order of Henry IV, as a hilltop castle and was the residence of the Counts of Nassau for a long time. The northern part of the complex, the so-called upper castle, was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle from 1614 to 1634, which is why Burg Idstein is often referred to as Schloss Idstein.
