On July 5th, Calvin Jr. was moved from the White House to Walter Reed Army Hospital; his parents likewise moved into a room there, to be with their stricken boy. By July 7th, Calvin Jr.’s localized infection had developed into full-blown sepsis.
Calvin Jr. died a little over a week later at the age of 16. The President never forgave himself for Calvin Jr's death. His eldest son John said it "hurt [Coolidge] terribly", and psychiatric biographer Robert E. Gilbert, author of The Tormented President: Calvin Coolidge, Death, and Clinical Depression, said that

Without looking at her he quietly retorted, “You lose.” In 1928, while vacationing in the Black Hills of South Dakota, he issued the most famous of his laconic statements: “I do not choose to run for president in 1928.” Despite his popularity, Coolidge’s time in the White House was touched by tragedy.
