Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd was born sometime around 1100 AD, the youngest daughter of Gruffydd ap Cynan, the King of Gwynedd, and his wife Angharad. She was born at Aberffraw, which was one of the major seats of the Gwynedd kings in the middle ages.
Gwenllian was the daughter of Gruffydd ap Cynan (1055–1137), Prince of Gwynedd and Angharad ferch Owain, and a member of the princely Aberffraw family of Gwynedd. Gwenllian's "patriotic revolt" and subsequent death in battle at Kidwelly Castle contributed to the Great Revolt of 1136 . There are several notable artistic depictions of Gwenllian.

When Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd was born in 1080, in Aberffraw, Anglesey, Wales, United Kingdom, her father, King Gruffydd ap Cynan of Gwynedd, was 25 and her mother, Angharad ferch Owain Gwynedd, was 15. She married Cadwgan ap Bleddyn about 1095. They were the parents of at least 6 sons. She registered for military service in 1136.
