William Adam (1689 – 24 June 1748) was a Scottish architect, mason, and entrepreneur. He was the foremost architect of his time in Scotland, designing and building numerous country houses and public buildings, and often acting as contractor as well as architect.
William Adam, the pre-eminent Scottish architect of his generation, was also important as a designer of gardens and formal landscapes, many of which were created for his country house patrons. This chapter investigates how his work relates to contemporary and earlier fashions in British garden design, including the work of Sir John Vanbrugh and contemporary treatises by Stephen Switzer and others.
21 de nov. de 2007 · William, father of famous Scottish architect Robert Adam, was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, eastern Scotland, in 1689. In 1724 William transformed Hopetoun House (Sir William Bruce, 1700) into a great Scottish Classical House and this remains one of his key works. He was appointed in 1729 as the Surveyor of the Kings’ Works in Scotland.
