Born on December 18, 1852, in Rosindale, Bladen County, North Carolina, George Henry White died on December 28, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A successful attorney, White was among the most notable black Republican political leaders of his era: the last African American elected to Congress during the 19th century, and the first to serve in the 20th century.
