The eldest surviving son of John Hervey, 1st earl of Bristol, (1665–1751), he was educated at Westminster School and the University of Cambridge. He then made the customary “grand tour” of Europe and, at Hannover, Ger., became a firm friend of Frederick Louis (later prince of Wales), the eldest son of King George II.

The two never saw each other again, although Hervey regularly corresponded with his children, including the youngest daughter Louisa, who lived with her mother.
John Hervey, 1st earl of Bristol (1665–1751), born on the 27th of August 1665, was educated at Clare Hall, Cambridge, and became member of parliament for Bury St Edmunds in March 1694. In March 1703 he was created Baron Hervey of Ickworth, and in October 1714 was made earl of Bristol as a reward for his zeal in promoting the principles of the revolution and supporting the Hanoverian succession.

John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (27 August 1665 – 20 January 1751) was an English politician. John Hervey was born in Bury St Edmunds , Suffolk, the son of Sir Thomas Hervey. He was educated in Bury and at Clare College, Cambridge .
Hervey built a new Ickworth House 1701 (since replaced). He was cr 1st Baron Hervey 1703. He was cr 1st Earl of Bristol 1714. He died 20 Jan 1751, age 85 yrs. He had issue by 2nd wife: John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey , "Lord John Hervey", born 15 Oct 1696. He mar 1720 to Mary Lepell [born c.1700].
