Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was born on January 31, 1902, second daughter of William and Ada Bankhead. Just two weeks later, Ada Bankhead died. Consequently, Tallulah and her sister Eugenia , who was one year and one week older, lost their father, as he distanced himself in order to come to terms with his grief.

The girls were raised by a grandmother who found them to be uncontrollable. Tallulah, who had been a chubby, homely child, blossomed into a beautiful young woman during her teen years.
