Goldsmith nasceu em Los Angeles, Califórnia, filho de Tessa e Morris Goldsmith. [1] Ele aprendeu a tocar piano aos seis anos. Aos catorze, estudou piano, composição, teoria e contraponto. Goldsmith cursou a Universidade do Sul da Califórnia, onde teve como professor o compositor Miklós Rózsa.
