John Tyler Sr. was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Virginia. He was nominated by President James Madison on January 2, 1811. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 3, 1811, and received commission on January 7, 1811. He served until his death on January 6, 1813 .

His family was quite wealthy, as his mother was a plantation heiress. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke and died when he was only seven. His father was a judge who knew Thomas Jefferson well.
John Tyler, Sr. studied at the College of William and Mary and later served on the Board of Visitors. He served as a judge on various Virginia courts and was elected governor in 1808. His son, also John Tyler , was the 10th President of the United States and later served as Chancellor of William and Mary.
