He was elected as a Liberal MP in 1868 and entered the Cabinet as War Secretary in 1886. He earned a reputation as an efficient political operator.

A genial and popular politician, Campbell-Bannerman none the less acquired a reputation, which still clings to him, as uninspired and unlikely to reach the top in politics. In fact he proved to be much more shrewd and determined than his apparently more talented rivals in both parties.
