Family and early career. He came from an ancient Cornish family as the son of Sir Francis Godolphin (1605–1667) and nephew of the poet Sidney Godolphin.At the Restoration, he was introduced into the royal household by King Charles II of England, whose favourite he had become, and he also entered the House of Commons as member for Helston, in Cornwall.

He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of Helston in Cornwall from 1741 [2] to 1766, [3] when he succeeded to the title of Baron Godolphin (of Helston) on the death of his cousin Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin. The second creation, as Baron Godolphin, of Helston in the County of Cornwall, was in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1735 for Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin, with remainder, in default of male issue of his own, to the male issue of his deceased uncle Henry Godolphin, the Dean of St Paul's. The 2nd Earl died on 17 January 1766.
