Henry's grandfather, Thomas Cromwell, had been created Baron Cromwell of Wimbledon in 1536 and Earl of Essex in 1540 as a reward for his service as chief minister to Henry VIII, but he had lost those titles by attainder in Jun 1540.
Abstract. This chapter describes the Cromwell's regime after his successful campaign in the invasion of Ireland from 1649–50. In England, Cromwell made repeated and varied but unsuccessful attempts to reconcile his commitment to the ‘rule of the saints’ with his hankering after a return to a constitutional regime acceptable to the ‘political nation’.
