Born on Jan. 14, 1845, Fitzmaurice was the great-grandson of Prime Minister Lord Shelburne, and the son of Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice and his wife Emily. The lineage of the family dated back to the 12 th century where his ancestors were the powerful Fitzgerald and Fitzmaurice families.
