This two-CD set, featuring the same choir, orchestra and (with one exception) soloists, was recorded in the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, in January this year, within the season of Epiphany and only weeks after the St John’s performance for Christmas 2012.

In January 2013, the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge joined forces with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenent in Trinity College Chapel to record all six cantatas with Hyperion Records. They were joined by soloists: James Gilchrist (Evangelist/tenor), Katherine Watson (soprano), Iestyn Davies (countertenor), and Matthew Brooke (bass).
Patrick Gowers wrote his Viri Galilaei for double choir, soloists, and two organs for the consecration of Richard Harries as Bishop of Oxford at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1987. As Professor Jeremy Dibble points out in his instructive notes (an added bonus with lots of first-rate contextual information), the choirs’ continually upward phrases culminate in the joyful sound of the trumpet.

In respect of earlier recordings this addition is no less notable for the quality of its instrumentalists or for the classy line-up of soloists. But, in its forty or so young voices from Trinity College, the luxury is having one of the finest collegiate choirs around and which, under Stephen Layton’s meticulous preparation, produces an exceptionally refined quality.
The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge is one of the world’s finest choirs, one that operates in an atmosphere and expectation of excellence, neither knowing nor inhabiting a world of the middling or mediocre either in performances or recordings.
