Angelica Kauffman's painting depicts 'Design' as a seated woman drawing the classical sculpture known as the Belvedere Torso. This painting is one of four that Kauffman was commissioned to produce for the ceiling of the Royal Academy's Council Room in New Somerset House which opened in 1780.
