Nel 1994 il monastero di Gelati è stato inserito nell'elenco dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell' UNESCO, insieme alla vicina cattedrale di Bagrati. Quest'ultima, dopo aver subito un invasivo intervento ricostruttivo che, a detta dell'UNESCO, ne ha minato l'autenticità storica, è stata rimossa dal patrimonio il 9 luglio 2017 [1] .

Il Monastero di Gelati è stato dichiarato patrimonio mondiale dell'umanità dall'UNESCO. Per noi è importante perché ci ricorda l'"Età dell'oro della Georgia".
