Lewis W. Hine nacque a Oshkosh, nello stato del Wisconsin, nel 1874. Dopo la morte del padre in un incidente, iniziò a lavorare e a risparmiare per potersi permettere di frequentare il college. Hine studiò sociologia presso la University of Chicago, la Columbia University e la New York University.

Lewis Wickes Hine (Oshkosh, 26 september 1874 - Hastings-on-Hudson , 4 november 1940) was een Amerikaans fotograaf en socioloog. Hij geldt als een van de grondleggers van de moderne reportagejournalistiek en had in zijn werk veel aandacht voor sociale thema’s, in het bijzonder ook voor kinderarbeid.

Lewis W Hine quiso ponerle una cara humana a esta situación dando origen a su primer proyecto fotográfico: Immigrants on Ellis Island. Creó retratos que la gente podía entender, con la gente que podía sentir alguna afinidad y documentaba aquella primera experiencia de llegar a la isla de Ellis, de llegar a América, en busca de nueva vida.
