Avant-garde music, or experimental music, is a type of music that is meant to push the boundaries of "what music is." It started in the 1940s and 1950s after World War II . Some famous avant-garde composers were John Cage , Karlheinz Stockhausen , and Henry Cowell.

1 de nov. de 1998 · Although the terms “avant-garde” and “experimental” are often used to categorize radical composers and their works, it has been noted that “‘avant garde’ remains more a slogan than a definition” (Griffiths 1980, p. 743) and that “‘experimental music’ is ill-defined and the concept it is used to describe is vague” (Rockwell 1986, p. 91).
