Plácido Domingo made his La Scala debut at the age of twenty-eight, in Verdi’s Ernani, on December 7, 1969 – opening night of the ensemble’s 1969-1970 season – and he recalled, in My First Forty Years: “I had already sung at the Met, the Vienna State Opera, and other great theaters.
The singers, led by Placido Domingo as Ernani and Mirella Freni as Donna Elvira, entertain us with bravura performances and it's a joy to listen to and watch from beginning to end. Since this is one of Verdi's lesser known and less performed operas, which deserves to be better known, La Scala is to be complimented on staging such a watchable and inspiring performance.

He has recorded over a hundred complete operas and is well known for his versatility, regularly performing in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English and Russian in the most prestigious opera houses in the world.
