You would think under those circumstances that her marriage would have been fairly auspicious. Unfortunately her royal grandfather owed a Marcher Lord 2,000 livres.

Through this marriage Hugh, also referenced as ‘the greediest of men’ grew in stature and power himself, as he quickly acquired a 3rd of the de Clare’s estates, including the Lordship of Glamorgan in 1317.
