He is a stranger who shares your afflictions but is remote from you; in his eyes you do not read love, but envy if he is suffering more than you, fear if he is suffering less.

The first chapter is narrated by a young man attending a party and tells of his "acquaintance" (as he is referred to in the story) that he meets there.
