For the first academic year, the new Gordonstoun School had just two pupils, with Hahn expecting the venture to run for only a few years as a vindication of his educational methods. The arrival of a third pupil changed his fortune.
Gordonstoun’s fully equipped, ocean-going yacht “Ocean Spirit of Moray” (an Oyster 80 foot ketch) is designed to introduce and train students for the sea. The only school in the country with a vessel of this sort, Gordonstoun has in recent years let its student crews explore further, going to the Arctic, the Azores and regularly takes part in Tall Ships Races.
Gordonstoun’s founder, Kurt Hahn, was keen to extend his educational ethos to the local community and not just those in the School. He therefore set up the Moray Badge (the precursor to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award) which started at Gordonstoun and Elgin Academy in 1936 and then spread to other schools in Moray.
