I had never heard of Anne Lister or this movie before but I read about it on a Bust list of lesbian period films (one of my fave subgenres!) and rented it immediately. The story is based on the real diaries of Anne Lister, an aristocratic British woman who sought to live openly as a lesbian in the early 1800s.
