Daves was at once a true artist, a western specialist, and a Hollywood pro whose work was respected by insiders but received little in the way of official recognition.

Film critic Kim Newman said of Daves and Anthony Mann that they were able to “ring changes” on seemingly familiar Western storylines by “playing up the psychologically acute reflections of their characters” in relation to the landscape as well as to each other.
