All of Nell Shipman’s film experience to this point set the stage for one of Canada’s earliest feature length film, Back To God’s Country (Smith 35). Back To God’s Country is one of Canada’s oldest feature length films, a six-reel silent movie originally produced as a motion picture before the story was published in book form in 1920.
Two other films based on Curwen's short story, "Wapi, the Walrus," which also bear the title Back to God's Country, include the 1927 Universal production directed by Irvan Willat and starring Renee Adoree and Robert Frazer, and the 1953 U-I production directed by Joseph Pevney and starring Rock Hudson and Marcia Henderson.
Two other film adaptations of his story, both titled Back to God's Country, are the 1919 Curwood-Carver silent production starring Nell Shipman and directed by David M. Hartford (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1911-20), and the 1953 U-I production directed by Joseph Pevney and starring Rock Hudson and Marcia Henderson (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1951-60).

The film has been re-made twice by Hollywood, but the original version was believed to have been lost. However, a print of the original film was found in Europe, restored in 1985, and re-released.
