The "Radetzky March", Op. 228, (German: Radetzkymarsch; pronounced [ʁaˈdɛtskiˌmaʁʃ] ⓘ) is a march composed by Johann Strauss (Senior) which was first performed on 31 August 1848 in Vienna to celebrate the victory of the Austrian Empire under Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz over the Italian forces at the Battle of Custoza, during the First Italian War of Independence.
Johann Strauss I’s music is one of those pieces most of us instantly recognise from the opening bars, and he dedicated the 1848 work to Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz (1766-1858). Radetzky was one of the more successful military commanders under the Habsburgs, most notably in Italian campaigns in the late 1840s, and certainly the most renowned in the era of the Austrian Empire .

1857 wurde Radetzky nach 72 Dienstjahren auf eigenes Ersuchen von Kaiser Franz Joseph vom Posten des Armeekommandanten und Generalgouverneurs des lombardo-venetianischen Königreichs enthoben. Als er ein Jahr darauf in der Villa Reale in Mailand starb, sollte er auf Anordnung Franz Josephs in der Kapuzinergruft bestattet werden.
