13 de feb. de 2023 · James K. Polk was the 11th President of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849. He was born on November 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Polk was a Democrat who is best known for his expansionist policies and belief in Manifest Destiny which led to the Mexican-American War and the annexation of Texas, California, and much of the Southwest.
With Jackson behind him, Polk became the Speaker of the House in 1835, a position he held for four years. He so strongly supported Jackson's initiatives that his colleagues nicknamed him "Young Hickory." In 1839, he was elected governor of Tennessee. When Polk ran for reelection in 1841, it was a bad time to be a Democrat.

Often referred to as the first "dark horse" President, James K. Polk was the last of the Jacksonians to sit in the White House, and the last strong President until the Civil War. He was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1795. Studious and industrious, Polk was graduated with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina.
