Nicholas Longworth II was the son of Joseph Longworth and grandson of winemaker Nicholas Longworth I (1783-1863), both distinguished citizens of Cincinnati. Nicholas Longworth III attended the Franklin School, a school for boys in Cincinnati, and then went on to attend Harvard College (Class of 1891), where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon (Alpha chapter) and the Porcellian Club.

Paulina was born on 14 Feb 1925 to Alice Lee (Roosevelt) Longworth, wife of Nicholas Longworth, III (1869—1931) who died when Paulina was barely six years of age. [1] The diaries of her mother, Alice Lee (Roosevelt) Longworth, have revealed her biological father to be William Borah, Republican Senator from Idaho, who was 59 when Paulina was born.
Nicholas Longworth became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1925, at a time when the office was weak and ineffectual. It had been so since 1910, when the House rebelled against the tyranny of Speaker Joseph Cannon and reduced the position to virtual insignificance.
