19 de jun. de 2022 · In 1665, Johan de Witt managed to keep control of his maritime interests, but by 1672 the war was raging and for Johan de Witt it was to be a disastrous year. England and France, the two main enemies of the Dutch Republic, managed to invade with very little effort or obstruction due to the lack of a Dutch land army.
Johan de Witt was the grand pensionary of the province of Holland in 1653. This was a stadholderless period in the Republic because Prince William III was still a minor. The accomplished Johan emerged as the actual leader of the civil government, over which the States General, rather than the stadholder, held sway. This led to considerable tension.
Jan de Witt attended Beeckman's school in Dordrecht, then in 1641 he entered the University of Leiden to study law. At university he showed remarkable talents, especially in mathematics and law. In 1645 Jan and his elder brother Cornelius visited France, Italy, Switzerland and England, then on his return Jan lived at The Hague as an advocate from 1647 to 1650 .
