Hildebrandt, Johann Lukas von, * 14. 11. 1668 Genua (Italien), 16. 11. 1745 Wien, neben J. B. Fischer von Erlach der bedeutendste Architekt des österreichischen Barock. Schüler von C. Fontana in Rom und Festungsingenieur in den italienischen Feldzügen unter Prinz Eugen, dessen bevorzugter Baumeister er wurde.
At the turn of the eighteenth century, famed military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy purchased a tract of land in Vienna and commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to design the Belvedere, a complex of two palaces and gardens.
Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt was born in Genoa (Italy) in 1668 and studied to become an architect in the workshop of Carlo Fontana in Rome. During his studies, he became familiar with the round and flowing shapes of Italian Baroque , which he later developed into an own, characteristic style .

In the 18th century, the Austrian general Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the renowned Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to build a summer residence. After the death of Prince Eugene, Empress Maria Theresa acquired the entire complex and transformed the Upper Belvedere into an exhibition venue for the imperial collections – making it one of the first public museums in the world.
