  1. The Murder of David Rizzio. On 9th March 1566, David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary Queen of Scots ' was assassinated in front of Mary, who was heavily pregnant. Several members of the Douglas family were implicated. Rizzio was born around 1533 near Turin, Italy, and is first recorded as David Riccio di Pancalieri in Piemonte.

  6. David Riccio (or David Rizzio) was born in Italy. He travelled to Scotland in 1561 with the duke of Savoy's ambassador. He sang before Mary Queen of Scots who subsequently appointed him a gentleman of the Privy Chamber and later secretary. His closeness to the queen aroused the suspicions of her husband, Lord Darnley, and of the Scottish nobles.
