  2. Lamb was the son of Sir Matthew Lamb, 1st Baronet, and his wife Charlotte (née Coke), and succeeded in the baronetcy on his father's death in 1768. The same year he was returned to Parliament for Ludgershall, a seat he held until 1784, and then represented Malmesbury from 1784 to 1790 and Newport, Isle of Wight from 1790 to 1793.

  3. In 1768 Lamb was returned by George Selwyn for Ludgershall at the recommendation of the Duke of Grafton. In Parliament he supported the Grafton and North Administrations, and when he voted with Opposition on the naval captains’ petition, 9 Feb. 1773, he was marked in the King’s list as a friend.

  5. Hace 4 días · As Peniston Lamb had inherited a considerable fortune, Elizabeth married into money. She was just 16 when she married Peniston, who was 24. Their first child was born just over a year later, on 8 June 1770, so Elizabeth would have been 17 and pregnant when she posed for the portrait.

  6. 18 de oct. de 2023 · Peniston Lamb was the Member of Parliament for Newport from 1793 to 1796 and the Member for Hertfordshire from 1802 until his death from tuberculosis in January 1805. The acquisition of this painting is an important addition to the number of early works by Lawrence already in the collection, above all his full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte.
