La relación entre Melanchthon y Lutero fue siempre de gran intensidad. Desde muy temprano, su trabajo conjunto en la universidad se había transformado en una íntima amistad. Cuán intensa fue esta relación, queda claro en la siguiente frase de Melanchthon sobre su amigo Lutero: "Preferiría morir antes que estar separado de este hombre."
