El primer duque de Braganza, a quien se concedió el título en 1442, fue Alfonso, hijo ilegítimo de Juan I, rey de Portugal. El duque Juan ( 1543 - 1583 ) pretendió la corona para su esposa, pero el reino fue a parar a Felipe II de España en 1580 ; un nieto del duque Juan se convirtió en Juan IV , rey de Portugal, cuando el país se independizó de la Monarquía Hispánica en 1640 .
