Bien plus que le peintre de ruines et de paysages dont la postérité a gardé l’image, Hubert Robert fut l’un des plus grands créateurs d’imaginaire poétique du 18e siècle. Véritable homme des Lumières, il entreprit un remarquable itinéraire d’artiste qui le conduisit de Rome jusqu’à la cour de France dont il réalisa certains des plus spectaculaires décors.
Fu nominato disegnatore dei giardini reali e fu il primo conservatore del Musée Royal. Durante la Rivoluzione francese fu imprigionato, ma fece poi parte del comitato rivoluzionario, incaricato della costituzione del Museo Nazionale. [1] Tornò per un breve periodo in Italia, nel 1802, poi si trasferì nel Lussemburgo dove morì, nel 1808.
